Rovaniemi in winter: what to book and when

What can you book in Rovaniemi?
Rovaniemi’s bookable winter is built on a few large activities — northern lights tours, husky safaris, reindeer experiences, snowmobile safaris and meeting Santa Claus — and a set of smaller ones around them; the same operators often sell two or three of them in one trip. We list 921 tours with a working booking link from 154 operator names, and a tour is counted once even when it belongs to two of those activities. Nothing in the listings states a child price, so a family total is something you have to ask the operator for.

Tours are the ones we list with a working booking link; the same rules and figures as on each activity’s own page. Prices are the lowest listed per-person price of each tour that is not private (group prices and prices without a stated basis are left out; n = tours with such a price). Typical = median, shown only when at least 5 tours state the figure. Duration = midpoint of the stated range, multi-day tours left out. Rows are ordered by the number of tours.

The darkness you need for northern lights lasts from September to March, and within it March is the strongest month in the weather record: a clear, dark hour occurs on 50 % of March nights against 36 % in February. Over three nights in a row the same figures become 81 % in March and 65 % in February, and in the weakest single February in the record three nights gave 31 %. Daylight is the other half of the picture: December has under three hours of daylight a day, February has eight and March close to twelve, so a February trip still has usable daytime for husky, reindeer and snowmobile tours.

Counted from the operators’ own availability calendars in Visit Finland DataHub. The other 726 tours we list do not state their months at all, so this table is a floor, not the whole offer: a month with a low count can still have tours that simply do not publish a calendar. A tour counted in two activities is counted once here.
Snow is on the ground on essentially every day from December to April and on three days in four in November, so the snow activities have a long season, but the tours that publish a calendar do not spread evenly across it. Of the 195 tours whose operators publish an availability calendar, 159 list January, 158 February and 155 December, against 36 in July — the deep winter is where the offer is. The rest of the tours we list do not publish months at all, so a quiet-looking month in the table can still have tours; it cannot tell you the opposite either.

A clear, dark night is a precondition for seeing the northern lights, not the chance of seeing them. We do not compare destinations with these figures, because differences between weather stations can explain differences between places.
Tour data
How operators were found: no single list is complete, so we combined 619 candidate companies from several sources (Visit Finland DataHub 137, GetYourGuide 88, the Finnish Trade Register (PRH open data, tourism-related lines of business) 424, Viator 6, visitrovaniemi.fi listings 38, the visitrovaniemi.fi company directory 89, web searches in seven languages 141; a company can be in several). Each candidate with a website was checked on its own website. Tour details are taken first from the operator’s own website (or Visit Finland DataHub (opens in a new tab)); booking platforms fill in what the operator’s page does not state.
The tables and tour lists include the tours in our data that have a working booking link: 921 tours (733 with details from the operator’s own website; listed on: DataHub 211, GetYourGuide 155, Viator 23, visitrovaniemi.fi 94, operator site 611 — the same tour is often listed in several places, so these add up to more than 921), collected 2026-09-21–2026-09-22. 159 tours were left out because they have no working booking link yet. A tour whose operating base is more than 50 km from the centre is listed only when the tour page says it departs from, or picks up in, the destination; the distance is then shown on the tour. Distances are measured from coordinates in Visit Finland DataHub, or from the postal code of the company’s registered address (PRH open data (opens in a new tab); postal code areas from Statistics Finland (opens in a new tab)). Prices change daily; check them on the booking page.
Links to operators’ own pages were last checked on : 1404 addresses across every activity on this site, of which 21 did not answer with a working page and are not linked. GetYourGuide and Viator links are not fetched.
No sort order on this site is affected by commission.
